Cityscapes
Several years back, I was looking through a brochure for the McMichael Gallery Juried Show and I was seeing all this work that looked just like what I had been doing – pictures of beautiful landscapes. This is a crowded field. Around the same time, I would be watching C.S.I.-N.Y. and to show that the action was going back to the lab, these amazing aerial shots would be spliced in. We’d be flying over the tops of skyscrapers at reach-out-and-touch height. The magnificent angular abstracts formed from buildings were reminiscent of paintings by Hoffman or Mondrian. The slow pan that amplified the radical perspective gives the feel of dropping into. I could watch a whole show of just these shots.

Sacred Geometries
I’m switching it up again. What follows is a collection of paintings I call the Sacred Geometries. They are on display at the Kent Farndale Gallery, Port Perry, for the month of February.
With Geometric Abstraction the possibilities seem infinite.
My one constant is the technique. I draw each piece on a wood panel, cut the design and then stain it- the cuts prevent the stain bleeding through the grain.
The first piece in this series was based on a floor pattern in the Sistine Chapel.

The Drip Show
For some reason the question occurred to me: “Could realist paintings be created with dripped paint?” When I asked myself this, I wasn’t aware of it having been done by others before me. It was my own private quest.
I have a lot of house paint left over from my colour field work. I supplemented it with quarts of primary colours and gallons of black and white. Using stir sticks, I started practicing. Sometimes paint runs down the stick in a lovely continuous ribbon. More often it sends a blob and stops. Or a drip hangs on and you wait and wait and wait or a gush of paint flies off the stick just where you don’t want it.
One must embrace the accidental and let the drips fall where they may.

This collection of paintings, done over a three-year period, features waves from the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
Woods in Winter
The panoramic painting “Woods in Winter” is a 360* wrap around view in which the first tree is also the last one. For years I’ve wanted to create a room whose walls vanished into the illusion that it was the out-of-doors. This piece is a first step but with only 33′ of length the circle it makes is only 10′. I have shown the piece with half of it mounted in a semi-circle. This was quite exciting as it makes the shadows fall in place. I have drawn proposed stretchers that wrap around in a spiral but I’ve not yet built them. Another idea I entertain for this piece is to use technology to print it out enlarged to room height as a wallpaper. If the height went from the present 3′ up to 8′ the length would expand to 88′ which would paper a fair sized room.
Content wise this is a picture of a beautiful late afternoon in the woods in winter.
